Final UT3 Environmrnt

Published.zip
The file above is our final UT3 model, created by ET3 team.

Aim:
Create a game in UT3 which is inspired by the snakes and ladders game.

Definition of snakes and ladders:
In the original snakes and ladders game,
people played between 2 or more players on a playing board with numbered grid squares.
On certain squares on the grid are drawn a number of "ladders"
connecting two squares together,
and a number of "snakes" or "chutes" also connecting squares together.
Players take turns to roll a single dice to move and aim for completion,
they land on the lower-numbered end of the squares with a "ladder",
they can move their token up to the higher-numbered square.
If they land on the higher-numbered square of a pair with a "snake",
they must move their token down to the lower-numbered square.
(wiki, snakes and ladders, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakes_and_ladders#Playing)

Distinctive elements between the original "S&L" and our game
- a 3 dimensions gaming space rather than the original grid paper.
- using matinee method to control people going up and down to express the concept of "snakes and ladders"
- people can choose they way to go to the goal (the top) instead of the dice
- players never know they will go up or down until they stepped on the slabs, which can increase the fun and interest
- players can shoot or kill their competitors during the game

The story of our game
- the death mode game which only allow one player to be survived
- escape from the exploding space
- reach the teleporter on the top by jumping on the slabs
- failure of landing on slabs or falling may cause injure or even death

Responsibility of our team members
Matinee - Teresa
- moving slab (with sound effect)
- camera setting for trailer at the beginning of game start
- interior

Particles - Wirada
- Focus on fire effect (and related fire burn sound effect)
- flame
- smoke
- sparks

Kismet - me (Rebecca)
- Lighting with trigger (the light on each floor will turn on every 1 seconds)
- lighting with sound effect
- teleportation
- set the activation time of trailer

Draft UT3 Environment

DM-BENV2423_Template.ut3
This is the draft model of our project,
we imported my solid work model from last exp to 3Ds max,
after resizing the volume and applying the material,
the model was ready to be used in UT3 editor.

In this model,
Teresa built couples of slabs to make up the interior environment,
and create the matinee system,
which can apply the function of going up and down to those slabs.
However,it still not satisfied as a gaming environment,
as we still need to decorate the scene by particle system,
and connect all the components by kismet sequence.

Animation x 3

The following animations are created by 3Ds Max,
and they are all contained the method of "pan", "move" and "rotation" in one.

Original Cactus Model:

X Model:

Y Model:

Y model - cut off 70% from cactus model

The image above shows that the volume of Y model is 22519.2,
which nearly the 30% of the volume of cactus model.

Proposal:
This model is created basing on the concept of "freestanding exploder"
which its porosity is greater during the explosion in exp1.

As I mentioned in pervious post,
according to the result of exp1,
the fractional pieces of the "freestanding exploder" was going off into different directions and the sizes are various.

Therefore, I cut off the void ramdomly through the entire model by using irrectaular and incisive shapes,
once again, I want to create the scene of explosion, as well as expressing the greater porosity and high level of percussion of explosion.

Here are some images of Y model that I rendered in 3Ds Max:

The images of 3 models together:

(Left: Original Cactus Model, Middle: Y Model, Right: X model)

X Model - cut off 45% of Cactus Model

The image above shows that the volume of X model is 41345.90,
which nearly the 55% of the volume of cactus model.

Proposal:
This model is created basing on the concept of "exploder placing in container"
which its porosity is lower during the explosion in exp1.

As I mentioned before, according to the result of exp1,
the fractional pieces of the container exploder was popping up first, then explode.

Therefore, the exterior of this X model is unbroken,
and I only cut off the void in the center part, mainly focus on the top.
I use the irrectgular shapes to sketch the void,
that is because the exploded fractional pieces are irrectgular,
I want to create the scene of "explosion"

Here are some images of the X model that I rendered in 3Ds Max.

Exp 2 draft proposal

In exp 1, I created a comparison documentary movie about explosion,
which experimenting the different porosity of fractional pieces if the exploders were placing in different method - freestanding and within a container.

The result of Exp1:
1. the fractional pieces of the freestanding exploder was going off into different directions after exploded, which mean its porosity is very high;
2. in turn, the other group of exploder was placing in a container, its fractional pieces was popping up first, and then explode during the explosion; comparing to the freestanding exploder set, its porosity is lower.

In exp 2, I am going to create 2 models by cutting off the specific volume (X = 45%, Y = 70%)from cactus model, to express the result that gained from exp1.

Since the percentage of X is lower, so I would apply this prescription on the container exploder , as its porosity is lower. On the hand, Y percentage will be applied on the freestanding exploder, in order to express its greater porosity.

Calculation task

The image above is showing one of the solid work function - mass properties volume,
which can calculate the actual volume, density, mass, and surface area of the model.

The volume of this Cactus model is 75265.08 cubic meters.

In the next process, I am going to draw the other X and Y models basing on this cactus model,
with cutting off a specific percentage of the volume which is 45% and 70%;
moreover, these 2 models should express and related to the porosity and explosion concept that I found in the Exp 1.

Before building up the model, calculation is the first step:

X model : cut off 45% of the cactus model volume (75265.08 cubic meters)

75265.08 x 45%
= 33869.286

I should cut off 33879.286cubic meters from cactus model.
in the other words, total volume of X model should be 41395.794 cubic meters,

Y model : cut off 70% of the cactus model volume (75265.08 cubic meters)

75265.08 x 70%
= 52685.556

I should cut off 52685.556 cubic meters from cactus model.
in the other words, total volume of X model should be 22579.524 cubic meters,

Through this mass properties function,
I can get the calculation done easily,
and also a huge benefit for calculating the requirement of surface and construction material for the particular model.

Cactus Model

These are the image of the 363 George st cactus model that I created in solid work.
I used lot of plans to create the voids according the their different height,
Firstly, I sketched the shape of the void on the plan,
then using the extrude cut function, set up the correct height and direction,
after all the voids were created.

To create this kind of architecture 3D model,
I think solid work is much more easy to control comparing to 3Ds Max,
because it is accurate and efficient which can draw the shape through the section and plan.

363 George Street Envelope

This is the first step of creating the cactus model of 363 George st,
this envelope model is built by solid work,
through the "sketch", "plan", and "extrude cut" function.

In the next step,
I will simply use these three functions to cut the void,
in order to create the cactus model for the future tasks.

Final experiment 1

Title: The porosity of the fractional pieces of oil drums after explosion

Created by: Pui Pui, YEUNG

Tools: GMOD, Fraps, Windows movie maker, Photoshop

Background music: Sounddogs.com

My experiment videos:

The main concept of my very first experiment video (see pervious post)
is about the explosion within a container, it is kind of the concept of firework.
Several amount of oil drums and dynamites were placed in a container,
the aim of this video is investigated that
the result of the porosity and explosive direction of the fractional piecesafter explosion.

For pushing this experiment further,
the comparison of explosions
- between the oil drums in container and free standing on the ground
was made in the final video in terms of investigate that,
which placements of oil drums would reach the greater porosity after explosion.

In the final experimental video,
same amount of oil drums and dynamites were put in different position,
their fractional pieces have different porosity after explosion.

The fractional pieces of oil drums and dynamites which placed on the ground
were spurted out everywhere without a certain direction,
and their porosity is great.

In turns, the fractional pieces of explosive objects in container
were intensively popped up to the sky
and the porosity is less than the free standing one.

The result of this experiment is
the porosity would be greater if there are not obstacles near by the dynamites
during the explosion.
Moreover, the direction of exploded fractional pieces can be controlled
by putting explosive objects into a container,
that is what firework does.

The type of documentary:

As Bill Nichols described that Expository Documentary
is the expression of specific idea
basing on the interact of explication and image/video,
in terms of prevail with the audiences
to acknowledge the film maker’s view point.

In my final movie,
a clear concept of the experiment was established by
the explanatory statements and evidential video clips,
thereby it should belong to the Expository Documentary

Definition of porosity

Definition of porosity:

Porosity could be defined as ‘density’ and ‘volume’;
in this experiment of explosion movie,
porosity can also be described as
'the density of fractional pieces of the explosive object/s after outburst.’
In the other words, an object being exploded
and its fractional pieces pop out because of the pressure;
the distance and density of each fractional piece called ‘porosity’.

The explosive object/s could be a single elements, numbers of elements,
or one element which formed by several individual elements.

Halo 3 Fireworks

created by : Nate Dynamite

From this movie,
we can see that the direction of the explosion
could be controlled by putting the dynamite into a container.

In this movie, since the container is spinning,
so the fractional pieces are falling from different directions
following the orientation of “exit” of the container.

This movie is kind of related to my first experimental movie,
as the dynamites are also put in a container,
and the fractional pieces are exploded to a certain direction.

The next step I would try to explode the oil drums on the ground,
rather than putting into a container,
and see the difference between both positions,
including which directions of fractional pieces will go,
and also figure out the relationship of porosity of them.

Task 1 movie clip 1 [EDITED]

This movie is the summation of the 3 movie clips that I created before,
through giving it a scenario,
adding the audio and sound effects,
edit out the clips,
finally it becomes a new and more reasonable story.

This movie could be kind of Expository Documentary,
as it tells the story through images/movies and words.

Moreover, it could be counted as Reflexive Documentary,
as the idea of this movie is about terrorist ,
which somehow can related to the issue of reality world.

Week 1 "explosion" machinima review

I think this video is quite interesting not just because I am a fan of GTA,
but the quality and creativity of it.
In this video, it was not just a single explosion,
There is a numbers of car exploded continuously
after the character threw a grenade into them.
Finally the character dead at the end,
because he gets too when he fire upon the cars
